It happened overnight. I said I could do something and it became a brand. When I wrote my first book I knew that I could turn words into positive messages. Some called them acronyms but when they needed a name I added mine and they became Derricknyms. Now everywhere I go people call me Derricknyms because of what I can do and how my gift makes them feel when I personalize their name.

One of my greatest Derricknyms is WOE for Words Of Encouragement. When I was down and out I read in the bible, “Woe is me.” When I looked up WOE in the dictionary it stated that woe was a trial or tribulation. A woe to one may be losing a job while to another it might be losing a loved one. No longer wanting woe to be negative the slogan came to me that “Before you leave work or go to sleep at night, Give someone a WOE, a Word Of Encouragement.” Through WOE I realized that a brand can come through something you are great at and also through a situation that you have to go through.

After evaluating my life I realized that everything I do comes through one word. I traced my motivational speaking roots that go back to 1992 and came up with a formula that if applied can bring you favor.

Life itself breaks things down to me in terms of words and in my humble opinion there are 7 keys to success. These keys to success that I will leave you with are the ones that are the basis for my new book 1 Word Is All It Takes To Build Your Brand.

The 1st key to success is to Find Your Word. Look at what you do or are good at and try to simplify it in one word. My word is Encouragement. If you can pinpoint exactly who and what you are it allows you to focus on what you need to do.

The 2nd key to success is to Speak Your Word. Write down why this is your word and turn it into an affirmation that you can use to speak life into your dream. Write this statement on a piece of paper that you can keep with you or near you at all times.

The 3rd key to success is to Activate Your Word. Pull out a piece of paper and write down what your word inspires you to write. The ideas that pour out in this brainstorming session will be phenomenal. Give it a chance and don’t limit yourself. Many have discovered that for the first time that they could write poems, stories, quotes and even novels. Some will even come up with ideas for articles that could produce future books or movies.

The 4th key to success is to Name Your Word. Take some of the ideas that you have brainstormed and give them a title. When I wanted to describe myself when I marketed my workshops I used my word and called myself the Encouragement Speaker. Each article or concept that you bring to life has value and with the right brand there is no limit to how far you can go with it.

The 5th key to success is to Share Your Word. If you like to write short pieces like quotes a good idea is to open up a Twitter or Facebook account and share your ideas with your friends or followers. If you are a long distance writer a blog with WordPress or Blogger would be a good idea and if making videos to empower others is your cup a tea give YouTube or Tube Mogul a try.

The 6th key to success is to Keep Your Word. It is known that it takes at least 21 days for a habit to become permanent in your life. Several attempts may be necessary for others to believe in you enough to make you a part of their day. Keep sharing your insight day after day and you may soon become the expert that others see you as.

The 7th key to success is to Live Your Word. Once you learn to keep your word it will become a part of your lifestyle where you wake up and Live Your Word. When this happens you will have a brand that can stand because 1Word Is All It Takes To Build Your Brand.

DERRICK Interview with Entertainer Word One

July 23, 2013

WordOneEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Word One (aka Grey Poltergeist) who has become one of the fastest growing names in hip-hop over the past year. He has opened the door for change in the music industry with his “Underdog Movement” by creating music and a movement that caters to your average, everyday citizen.

Traveling the country, doing everything from drug dealing to owning his own business, recording artist Word One is ready to tell the world his story of being an UNDERDOG. Born in Los Angeles, California; although, raised mostly in New York and Jacksonville, Florida, Word One would tell you that he’s the “man from nowhere”, because of all of his travels in between and all of the different cities that he’s lived in.

What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My goal is to provide a good financial living for my family and provide my mother with the best medical attention she can get. I have achieved many goals: Such as featuring with a 2-time Grammy winning artist, working with platinum artists an producers, traveling throughout the country and abroad, being signed (more than once), and being able to say that I’ve touched countless lives.

What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

I am a High School graduate. The ability to read properly and calculate numbers is about all the school education I could apply to my life. School cannot teach you common sense though. My most valuable education comes from experience from myself and others.

What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

The only resource I can bring to what I do is experience. But I don’t use that to stand out. Instead, I use my experiences to create music that the people can relate to. I can only hope that it shows them that they’re not alone in their problems.

WordOneLogoWhen did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I was ready from the moment that I decided this is what I wanted to do. Whether others felt or feel that I’m ready is a different story. I dedicate my all to my craft. But I don’t believe that anyone should pursue a goal or career if they don’t feel ready from the start.

Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why?

Jesus. There’s really no one else worth learning about more than him.

What challenges have you had to overcome?

The challenges to make it even this far are countless. But even to this day, there is always negativity thrown at what I do. Every accomplishment is met with skepticism. Every show needs to get promoted 100 times harder for a fraction of a larger artist’s turnout. Having to overcome people’s ideals that because they haven’t heard of me, it means my music isn’t good or haven’t accomplished anything.

What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

There are no shortcuts to success. Once you have determined what your goal is; nothing else should exist until you have reached it. You must develop a tunnel-vision that leads to that goal. Partying, sex, and nonsense will be around for eternity. You won’t miss anything. Hard work and dedication are more than catch-phrases. They should be the words that guide your life and lead you to your goal. It will also separate you from the countless number of others fighting to reach your goal before you do.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

To help others launch into their God-given destiny. I have helped more than 500 authors, speakers and ministers over the last 12 years in business. They are shining their LIGHT and making an impact in the world.

E is for Encourage. What encourages you?

Positive people who are purpose-driven.  People who are smart and courageous. I love to read motivational books too.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

I “get” people and can help them connect to the right people. I have been told that I “break things” down and give people courage to try new things to build their dreams. I have a writing/teaching gift too.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I don’t think that way. I don’t analyze that…I just do. I guess I’m always in a state of preparation, learning and education. I set goals and go for it.

I is for Individual. Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why?

They should really get to know the voice of God, the Holy Spirit. The Master teacher. Knowing HIM trumps everything. Knowing the voice of God will lead you to prosperity and give you peace and accentuate your wisdom.

C is for Continue. When you fail, things look bleak or are not optimistic what makes you want to continue?

Knowing that there are others who have had it harder than me that have made. I know I can too. I read tons of biographies. I love the John H. Johnson story.

Just one good idea – implemented the right way  – at the right time -with the right connections – can equal millions of dollars.

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with?

Develop your personal brand and stay true to it. Polish and upgrade your brand – but don’t change it. Stay authentic.
