DERRICK Interview with Blind Filmmaker Michael Schwartz

November 11, 2016

michaelschwartzEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Michael Schwartz who is a legally blind filmmaker and owner of Trailhead Productions brings fifteen years of experience in television news and production to the table, and you’ll see what that means all along the way. An award winning reporter, Michael knows television and works for you with the same dedication and ideals valued by the best in the business.   “We’re the storytellers, not the story.”  That means that at Trailhead, we never forget that you and your dreams are the stars of the show.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

I’m a big believer in breaking through boundaries. Although I’ve been gradually losing my eyesight since I was thirteen years old, my dream was to pursue a career in visual storytelling, and I’ve never taken “no” for an answer. Through a career as a broadcast reporter and photographer, and now as a documentary filmmaker, I’ve seen firsthand that it’s possible to merge the worlds of visual storytelling and visual impairment. From my first job all the way through my current film. Following my own passions, though, cannot and should not be the end of the story. My dream is to change perceptions, raise expectations and make a difference in the world of inclusion for people with disabilities.

E is for Education. What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

I went to the University of Missouri School of Journalism. What I loved so much about my education there is that no matter what your specific goals were, you had to learn everything about the business. It wasn’t good enough to want to be just an anchor, or a reporter, or a photographer, or any of the other jobs in journalism. You had to learn it all, and I had so many opportunities to learn skills that have benefited me throughout my career as a storyteller. Understanding what makes up a good picture, learning how to tell a concise story, understanding how to combine dozens of stories to build a newscast that makes sense… it’s all about crafting stories that make a difference.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

The first resource actually doesn’t have anything to do with tools of the trade. It has to do with drive and resilience. The fact of the matter is that if you’re going to be a visual storyteller who’s visually impaired, there has to be an inner belief in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, nothing else matters.

I also rely on the twin pillars of of communication and partnership. While it’s easy to talk about the mechanics of how I do my job – working with the spatial and acoustic dynamics of an environment or a set to frame a shot, or shooting on a 4K camera to edit in a 1080 timeline, or not thinking of color itself as much as color profiles to use waveforms and vectorscopes to craft the mood and design of a shot, these are all just that” mechanics. They explain how do my job, but not why I do my job. I do my job because I get to work with a team of creative professions who share a creative vision. It’s what gets me up every morning in search of great stories to tell.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I think the key to realizing your dreams is that you shouldn’t wait until you feel you’re 100% ready. The truth is that day may never come. There will always be at least one unanswered question, one skill you could hone a little more, one step you may feel you’re not ready to take yet. Life is about leaps of faith. When I set out to start my own business, one based on a risky proposition and an uncertain outcome – staring a video production company even though I’m visually impaired – the one thing I had was a belief that I could succeed. Yes, you start a venture with as many resources as you can muster and your prepare as much as you can, but success is based on action, and action requires at least a certain amount of faith in yourself. Really, I knew I was ready because I believed in myself.

I is for Individual. Name at least one individual in your network that others should learn more about and why?

I can’t speak highly enough of my colleague and friend Maxwell Ivey. Max calls himself the Blind Blogger, but his life is about so much more than his blindness. It’s about always seeking self-improvement, expanding horizons and making a difference. Max knows how to start with a dream, use the resources he’s developed over the course of a lifetime of finding unique solutions to difficult challenges, learning new skills to help him achieve his goals and always looking to the future.

C is for Challenges. What challenges have you had to overcome?

I believe that the challenge anyone with a dream has to overcome is facing down low expectations. What I’ve found is that people tend to rise to the expectations we set for them. As a creative artist – a filmmaker – who is visually impaired, I work every day not only to coordinate a creative vision with my team, but also to lead others to a world where there is no barrier to achievement. I direct and even shoot documentaries, and will continue to do this throughout and beyond the process of losing my eyesight. This is because there is a certain truism that we all have to come to accept, that pursuing one’s passion is the best starting point, because there are no barriers to accomplishment.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

There is really one key to success. Set the bar high for yourself and for those who share your passions. This doesn’t mean you’ll never make a mistake. As they say, that’s why pencils have erasers. High expectations push you to challenge yourself, and it motivates you to constantly question your own assumptions… even the ones you don’t know you have. Expecting the highest level of performance from everyone you work with encourages you to pursue nothing short of excellence.

Michael is a friend of mine, and I want to encourage you to support his new documentary series, “The Palette Project: Losing Sight, Maintaining A Vision.” He’s made it really easy to pledge with a micropayment of just $1 for the videos he’s posting on his Patreon feed. This is a great way to show your support, and you can make a difference by helping him make a difference. Plus, you get to see some pretty amazing videos of some pretty amazing people, and learn what it’s like to be a visually impaired filmmaker. – Maxwell Ivey

RELOCATE & Stay Great: How The Salgado Home & Relocation Services Team Helps Others Move Coast to Coast and Still Continue Their Dream

October 14, 2016

salgadohomecollectionwith Encouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes

Fay Salgado, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Fay Salgado Home had a vision that truly came to life after traveling the country with her husband Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado, speaking with countless athletes, front office people, management, entertainers and business men and women, that the need for an all-inclusive, professional relocation and organizational service became apparent. To fill that need, Fay launched Fay Salgado Home LLC and today I interview Fay through the word RELOCATE to give you a unique perspective on how to stay great when you move from state to state.

stanleycupR is for Reason: Why did you want to start a home and relocation business?

I was a former hockey wife for 9 years and this is what has made this journey easy for me. I moved twice a year during trades, minor leagues to the pros and back.  Having to move to Canada every summer during the off season with two children in tow gives me the inside track to identify with athletes, families and especially their significant other with constant life changes in every scenario.

E is for Experience: What expertise do you bring to the table that makes your vision able?

We have a team of experts that we built relationships with over the past 20 years.  Rather it be real estate brokers, shipping or insurance to risk management we know and trust our team members with our clients.

L is for Learn. After you started this venture what do you know now that you didn’t know before?

Building clientele isn’t just about your expertise. It’s about having a relationship of trust which leads to another client. This takes time to formulate especially working with celebrities and their families.

brainanO is for Opportunity. Where do see yourself through this business in years to come and are there other untap markets in the relocation industry?

I recently started developing “Salgado Home Collection” and my goal is to launch our candle collection for the 2016 Holiday season and help homecollectionsupport Brain Aneurysms awareness by giving a percentage of sales to a charity.  After the launch … honesty my vision has no end. With passion and drive the Salgado Home Collection will lead where God wants it to be.

C is for Caution. What are obstacles that people who have to move face and how does your company provide solutions to their problems?

In life we all have obstacles rather it be a divided family, a loss of a family member,  joining two families in one home, divorce, financial woes, job relocation, life insurance or health insurance and it always something and somewhere down the line that we all have to identify with one or more of these scenarios.

faybigdaddy

My services provide comfort for their situation that can or could be over whelming at that time of their move.  I guess I kind of look at it as “Every thing will be ok” and there is no better feeling. Example: When of one of my client has insurance needs I refer them to Richard Salgado of www.coastaladvisorsllc.com who has a credible name in name in the industry “Big Daddy” that most know and feel confident with his risk management services. Our network also extends to our clients when they have housing or development needs and we connect them with Elite Real Estate Brokers.

A is Aware. If someone has never moved before and especially not coast to coast what are some other things that they need to be aware of before contacting a company that does what you do?

Anytime you’re doing business with a company you are not familiar with there will always be some sort of risk factor. The first question I would ask is if the company is insured and bonded. If your dealing with an estate, I would ask how much their company is bonded for to make sure it can cover the value of your move and assets. If hiring outside sources to come into your home to organize, make sure they to are insured and bonded. Injuries do happen, things break and you don’t want to find yourself in a situation that could lead you to a lawsuit.

If you’re not buying and renting when you are moving into your next home make sure you always research who you’re renting from. Do background work on the home to make sure the property is not under foreclosure or prior law suits with other tenants. If you’re working with a management company that is locating a rental for you, it’s not usually their responsibility to research public records and investigate past history. The other advice would be to research your community, value of homes and schools.

T is Time. How long does it normally take to help someone move coast to coast and why is this the right time to be in business?

Each client has different needs and services required so to put a time line on a job is almost impossible. We treat our clients like family and a job is never done until they feel the comfort with our service. This is the main reason why I love to book in advance and work with exclusive clientele throughout the sports industry. Each subcontractor signs a nondisclosure contract to assure our clients privacy

E is for Excellence. How important is greatness and what do you want others to say once you have their move out if the way?

I want my clients to say, ummmm nothing and to just see them with a honest pure smile is good enough for me. It’s a great feeling to see a happy home and know I was a part of the process.

What else would you like to mention before we go?

Fay Salgado Home is an insured and bonded company that has clients in the NFL & NHL and for more information people can go to www.faysalgadohome.com

DERRICK Hayes Interview with Artist Joe Galaxy

December 25, 2015

JoeGalaxyEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Sun Star Records artist Joe Galaxy who is anything but your typical musician. The multi-hybrid rhymer showcases a futuristic sound that crosses genres and delivers music that appeals to fans of techno, pop, rock and hip-hop. Influenced by everyone from Beethoven to Nirvana and Led Zeppelin to Lil Wayne. 2016 is the year to be “Grateful” and release the debut album late Winter called the same: “Grateful”.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My dream is to succeed to ultra-success in my music career, family, peace of mind, and financially at the same time! I’m at peace now and know who I am regardless of which plateau I reach. For me, it’s a personal challenge to see how far we can take this thing man! Let’s get to the top. So far, I’ve achieved a killer album ft Pitbull & Renegade Foxxx, my music is playing worldwide on major radio, the fire is blazing. My goal is to win a Grammy Award, an Oscar, and be on the cover of GQ magazine. If I can inspire others to go for their dreams and have fun then that is an accomplishment too. Nothing exceeds like success baby! Follow me on Instagram: @TheJoeGalaxy to find out the up to the minute on my project and connect with me. I’d love hear from you.

E is for Education. What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

My educational background is life, a Bachelor’s in Computer Science, elite military training, & extensive acting/comedy programs. I use all of these educational backgrounds in my daily life. The no-quit, determined attitude is absolutely required to make it in the entertainment industry, especially the music industry. Initiative is the life blood of an entertainment industry entrepreneur. Remember, it is your career, nobody else gives a s$*t. But we all are playing a role and humor and not taking yourself too seriously will put everything in perspective. I don’t know how I use computer science these days except to make jokes about nerds because I am
one. lol Nerd is the other N word, lol. But I can say it because I was in the National Honor Society for Computer Science in College. haha for reals…

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

I have a universal appeal/look. I am a natural connector/networker. I am very confident but I come of humble, like a regular “Joe.” I do have a prosperity, personal development consciousness so my mindset is aligned with positivity. I understand cause and effect.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now? JoeGalaxy2

I was born ready. I just took awhile to find and get with the right people.

I is for Individual. Name at least one individual in your network that others should learn more about and why?

Mr. Ron King who is one of the single most talented modern day Picasso of our time. I’ve never seen anyone produce more masterpieces per moment in my life. We could burn all of his art to date and he would produce more even better master pieces tomorrow and start over. It’s truly a phenomena.

C is for Challenges. What challenges have you had to overcome?

All of them, OMG. There is nothing and noboday that can stop me. If this isn’t your attitude with supreme confidence in you then youre done. If you believe in yourself so much and your burning desire is there can’t nothing stop you. If you have doubt, then redo your work or work on your craft. The stepping stones appear out of nowhere when you believe and have a positive mental attitude. You will then see the way and not the challenges. I know that sounds like some Mr. Miagi shizl but it is true.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

I feel the most important keys are to stay the course, get with the right people, realize that over night success is a result of preparation that leads to that break through. How many years does it take to become a doctor or get a degree. Well keep that in mind when pursuing your dreams. Do it because you truly love it and it is your passion. Do what others aren’t willing to do. Develop yourself so you actually are the value and the money will flow to the value.

DERRICK Interview with International Singer and Songwriter Liryks

May 25, 2015

LiryksEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Liryks, a singer and songwriter who was born in Israel and has the bilingual gift to be able to speak and sing in English and Hebrew. Early on, she developed a passion for music and she began writing poems at the age of 9. As a teenager she did some modeling and attended acting classes.

While clearly gifted as an artist, Liryks was also bright academically, and she wanted to explore this path and widen her perspectives. She attended TA University Law Faculty and graduated summa cum laude.

Liryks produced several music shows formats for a European TV channel, and this experience encouraged her to focus on her music career and to produce her first album as a singer-songwriter. This album is an expression of the musical styles and vibes she absorbed in her voyages around the world combined with her original style and her exceptional mastery of the written word. All the album songs were written and composed by Liryks.

The first single, IN THE BEGINNING, gives a new meaning to ancient words, and creates a rare combination between a modern bit and the language of the Bible. This single is the product of a great poetic sensitivity, a clear vision on life, a unique voice and a cool and accurate musical production.”

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My dream is to live a meaningful life, full of love, creativity and awareness; I wish to sparkle as a unique singer-songwriter and to keep on developing my great career. I wish that my art and my songs will reach many more people around the world, touch their lives, influence, empower and inspire them. I want my art to bring love, spread joy, encourage self-reflection and offer comfort.

E is for Education. What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

I mix my natural talents with my vast educational background. I love exploring new fields and learn new things. I never stop learning.

Besides being a musician and an artist, I went to university and got my degree. University education has given me the opportunity to think differently, to have a broader perspective. It also gave me practical tools to provide myself, to read the “small letters” and to manage the “business aspects” of being the chief producer/the one in charge of my career as a singer-songwriter and my own brand “Liryks”.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

The resources that make me unique and stand out as a singer-songwriter are: Being creative, original, independent, cool and courageous in my way – in my art. I have a great belief and I am very sharp. I can be a pixie, pose for the camera, get serious, be funny, or sing electronic blues, but I’m always me.

Above all: I really do enjoy creating; I love the lyrics, the sounds and the music. I have my own deep truth to share, and I am sharing it in my own words, with my own voice and in my own original way.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I’ve always knew I was talented, I’ve always created, I ‘ve always knew I can reach the stars, but I’ve always done other things in other fields, that I was very good at. When I was ready to commit myself and focus on what is really important to me, it all summed up to becoming a singer-songwriter: my poems, my voice, my sense of style, my love.

I is for Individual. Name at least one individual in your network that others should learn more about and why?

I have a few names in mind, but taking into account the context of this interview, I name: Viktor Emil Frankl, M.D., Ph.D. a neurologist, and psychiatrist who wrote the world-famous book entitled “Man’s Search for Meaning“. He believed that life never ceases to have meaning, even in suffering and death, life has potential meaning and that, therefore, even suffering is meaningful. Frankl believed that the meaning of life is found in every moment of living and that people are primarily driven by a striving to find meaning in one’s life.

I think his life story is inspiring and teaches us of the strength of the human spirit, and the importance of finding a meaning in our life.

C is for Challenges. What challenges have you had to overcome?

One of the hardest challenges I have to overcome is: forgetting! I always have to remind myself as a singer – songwriter,(and we all have to remind ourselves as human beings): TO BE TRUE TO MY OWN NATURE; TO FOLLOW MY INNER TRUTH.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

If you are ready to be reborn every day, you learn new things all the time. Believe, be creative, dare and stay natural.

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with?

My name is Liryks, I am a singer –songwriter, my music is aimed  to inspire others, and I am glad people feel it. I am dedicating this paragraph to thank all you people that listened, came, participate, shared and sent me great comments and touching e-mails.

Remember: You don’t have to have a reason for loving. LOVE! You don’t have to have a reason for believing – BELIEVE! Thank you for loving and believing.

Visit Liryks for more information.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with  E. Ray Phillips who is a father, husband and CEO of a fast growing company called SoapSox that is committed to the cause of helping children and families and also looking to increase their impact exponentially. SoapSox has taken an unconventional path to get where they are today and is excited about the future.

My goal is to establish SoapSox as one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of children’s products and accessories in the market all while giving back to agencies that protect children from abuse.

E is for Education. What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

My educational background consists of a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the University of California, Riverside. With 16 years of working with children that have experienced trauma or abuse my training and skill set has served me well in managing stressful situations and decision making. Notably with our appearance on Shark Tank, and when negotiating deals with high stakes.

SoapSoxInnovationR is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

In business my greatest assets are my ability to engage people, form relationships, and resolve issues.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I don’t think you are ever truly ready. You decide to move forward in a direction, and with each challenge you overcome, you become more experienced and confident in your ability to execute.

I is for Individual. Name at least one individual in your network that others should learn more about and why?

Dr. Francisco Navarro of UCLA. He is extraordinary in his ability to build systems, tap resources, and teach people to dig deeper and excel despite the challenges that exist.

C is for Challenges. What challenges have you had to overcome?

I don’t like highlighting the challenges I have had to overcome because I think we all have adversity in our lives. However, I think I was initially a victim of circumstance who survived because that’s what you learn to do. I had some support so I luckily survived while a number of my childhood friends fell victim to the violence of gangs, drugs, etc. I was able to successfully navigate and thrive in high school despite many close calls with gangs, police, and my own bad decisions. I believe the most significant challenge for me was believing I was capable of being successful, and putting into action my potential.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

Keep reminding yourself that you are much capable of creating your own opportunity. Despite the long and challenging road, those that recognize opportunities and believe they can make them happen will be able to persevere and realize their dreams of being successful entrepreneurs and leaders. This belief system, will provide the fuel that drives them when setbacks are inevitably encountered.

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with?

Don’t wait for others, create the opportunity.

Visit E. Ray Phillips for information and promote what you do with a DERRICK Interview.
