DERRICK Interview with Filmmaker and 11 Time Author Travis Hunter

December 12, 2012

TravisHunter

Encouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Travis Hunter who is an author, mentor and father.  His first novel, The Hearts of Men, was originally published in 2000 by Hunter’s own company, Jimrose Publishing House. During the 2000 Book Expo America in Chicago, Hunter handed out copies of his self-published debut and one week later received an offer from Random House’s imprint, Striver’s Row/Villard, for the re-release of The Hearts of Men.

Hunter lives in a suburb of Atlanta with his son Rashaad. He is the founder of The Hearts of Men Foundation, Inc., through which he mentors and provides meaningful opportunities for underprivileged and at risk teens.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved? I’ve written eleven novels, One off Broadway Stage Play and I wrote, directed and produced a short film based on my novel, Dark Child so I have achieved a lot in terms of the goals I set for myself. But I’m always pushing to take it to the next level.

E is for Encourage. What encourages you? I’m encouraged by many things. One is my family. I want to lead a life where a real legacy is involved. Another is in the past I had a huge fear of failure which kept me from trying things that I believe would’ve given me lots of fulfillment.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out? I’m very creative so that’s my gift. I’m also a very happy person by nature, so I try to bring joy to every occasion.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now? I gained confidence in my writing as my readers provided feedback on my first novel. It (The Hearts of Men) became required reading at Florida State when I didn’t even have a degree.

I is for Individual. Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why? Wow. That’s a good question and I don’t I have a solid answer. I think people should learn more about our history and not the tidbits they give you in your school text. African Americans are a very resilient group and I think if the kids today learned more about our history, they might not take life for granted as many of them do.

C is for Continue. When you fail, things look bleak or are not optimistic what makes you want to continue? I’m in the business of writing books for black people so I go through my feast or famine moments. My son keeps me motivated and once again that fear of failure.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders? You have to stick to your goals, write out a business plan and tweak it as needed. Trust yourself. There is no such thing as job security anymore, so you have to believe and invest in your own vision. After all you wouldn’t fire yourself.

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with? Life is what you make it. Things may be tough, but so are you. If you think you can or if you think you can’t you are absolutely right. I think Henry Ford said that. Also my dad used to tell me; nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream. Wake up and start living.

They Still Call Me Daddy

March 24, 2012

I was there at the start

Never thinking that we would part

I lost the words to the song

Where marriages can go wrong

One thing that sings so clear

Children have never asked to be here

Through life pleasures and pains

Our love for each other still remains

We don’t get to see each other as much

Weekends, special trips and calls keep us in touch

Real love will make you smile

Nothing like when a father loves his child

When I look back on the past

Certain people didn’t want us to last

There’s nothing they can do

When you love me and I love you.

Through it all “They Still Call Me Daddy”

Today’s word is Parent

February 23, 2012

Be thankful for how you were raised so children will be thankful for how you raised them. The greatest teacher is the one who is willing to learn.

Because Of Who You Are

September 7, 2011

God flipped  the script on me one day and said, “Brother Hayes, because of who you are  my word doesn’t go in vain. You take a vocabulary that’s plain and use it to help others obtain. Some set goals while others want to free their soul. Because Of Who You Are. I shine like a star. They hear your story but you give me the glory. You never point the finger or let negativity linger. Your mother is in heaven with me and I’m going to bless you 70 x 7”

Kris Green, I had a chance to do radio Because Of Who You Are. Kim Hayes, I’m a better husband, Because Of Who You Are.  My children, Because Of Who You Are I’m a better father. James Hayes, I’m a better son Because Of Who You ARE.

ARE means Anger can Reveal Emergencies. This is a topic we have to touch on so that in our lives abuse will be gone. Battery is meant for the car and not for someone to go upside your jaw. Because of who you are things are meant to get better. Nothing should stop you from being a go getter. If you find yourself becoming too mad take a walk right outside of your pad. Stand at the end of the driveway so no one dies and we stay alive today. Because of who you ARE.

ARE means Angels Ready to Evacuate. When you do feel trapped like your insides have been slapped when your life sits alone on the curb it’s time to call on your reserves. Badder than the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Just say help and they’ll be quickly on the scene. Sometimes we wait too long. Thinking the relationship DJ is going to change up the song. Just when you think you can’t take no more. An angel comes through your open door. Left you with no words to say. Taken you to brighter days. You felt the pain and even have the scars, things will change Because Of Who You ARE.

ARE means Always Raise Expectations. When you have confidence and see the light you’ll start to put trials and tribulations to bed at night. Things will continue to go right as long as you keep victory in your sight. Expect to win. Expect to make friends. Expect business contacts. Expect to win contracts. In every situation that you’re facing start off with high expectations.  Keep hoping and praying and doors will open Because Of Who You ARE.

ARE means Always Receive Empowerment. When you conceive and believe you will receive. The seeds that were never taken for granted will produce flowers from when they were planted.  Tulips so you can speak and never feel you have to be weak. Roses so you when you rise people see success in your eyes. One day you will find the time to reflect when things weren’t fine. When no money was in the bank now all day long you have to give thanks. Each week I’m inspired. Because Of Who You Are. My name is Derrick Hayes and that’s my Word Of Encouragement.
