DERRICK Interview with Sports Agent Deryk Gilmore

September 3, 2014

DGEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Deryk Gilmore who is certified contract advisor for Priority Sports. Prior to joining the Priority team, Deryk was involved with college athletics for over 11 years working in football as a Recruiting Coordinator and Director of Football Operations in both the Big Ten and Pac Ten conferences. A New York native, Gilmore lettered and played defensive tackle for the Penn State Nittany Lions, a member of the 1986 National Championship Team.

After graduating from college, Gilmore went on to the University of Illinois where he began his work in football evaluating and recruiting the top high school players in the country. Developing unique strategies to market high school prospects, Gilmore helped the Illini recruit players that would take Illinois to the first major bowl game in 10 years. Deryk was then hired by the University of Oregon where he led the Ducks to a top 10 recruiting class in football and top 5 class in basketball, their highest ranked classes in the program’s history.

Gilmore, known for his creative marketing strategies has been featured in a number of sports publications. Deryk has a Bachelor of Science from Penn State in Agribusiness Management and an MBA in Operations and MS in Sports Marketing from the University of Illinois. He and his wife Camille, live in Atlanta, GA, with their sons Dantae’ and Deion.  Deryk and his wife, Camille, were recently profiled in Essence Magazine.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My goal is to have an impact on the community and leave a legacy.

E is for Education. What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

I have an MBA in Operations and MS in Sports Marketing- they are used daily to coordinate my business and to promote my players.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

My background in football is unique in that I have a great understanding of the game on and off the field and have worked so many years with athletes so as a player, administrator, agent and advocate there is not a problem that I have not encountered.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I prayed on it when I moved to Atlanta and know that I was directed to leave coaching and work with young men on a different level.

I is for Individual. Name at least one individual in your network that others should learn more about and why?

Ryan Goldin (GATA Training) and Lyle Henley (D1 Sports)  are two of the best trainers no one has heard of and where players should be working to get better.

C is for Challenges. What challenges have you had to overcome?

I think a lot of times African Americans will feel more comfortable with white agents which is surprising.  Despite your pedigree and background they feel that somehow you can’t help them.  It can be disappointing.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

The nuns in school used to say ask God for everything but don’t pray if you haven’t studied.  I think you need to put God first, trust in him and then outwork everyone and anyone.  Your hunger to win should be unmatched.

Words Of Encouragement for the Christian Student

January 19, 2014

BreaJamesBy Brea James

College may seem like a new world to you, it opens up a new door of “freedom”. You are no longer chained by your parents’ commands and you now are responsible for making your own decisions. This could be very new to some of you. Temptations will be knocking at your door like never before. Your peers may pressure you to drink, smoke, party, have sex etc. I am here to tell you that you do NOT have to give into those temptations. You do not have to compromise your anointing to fit in with a crowd that you were made to stand out from.

Being drunk may be fun while you’re tipsy but the next day you’re having a hangover. Having sex may bring you a moment of pleasure but it can also bring you lifetime consequences.

I understand that you may want to experience college life and have fun in the process and it is possible. It is possible to have fun in college and maintain an outstanding GPA as well. Being a Christian does not mean you don’t have fun. You’re just enjoying a different type of fun, a joy that cannot be explained. See the joy you find in Jesus is permanent; with him you find everlasting life. The devil dresses up the world’s type of fun and makes it look appealing, but it’s only temporary.

Through God, hard work and dedication you will be able to succeed in college. Whenever you feel like you are not able to keep going just call on the Lord and ask him to see you through. With God there is nothing that you will not be able to handle.  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13. And yes this does include finals week!

Seek God first and all things will be given to you…this includes your degree.

Brea James is a junior mass communications major at Winthrop University a who also has a blog called Stepping Into Purpose which is designed to share inspiration, motivation and encouraging words to help other students find their purpose and to get closer to God.

DERRICK Interview with Luke McGowan the Small Business Advocate at Thumbtack

August 26, 2013

ThumbtackEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Luke McGowan the Small Business Advocate at Thumbtack and represents the company and the answers in this DERRICK Interview are through the voice of Thumbtack.

DOur dream here at Thumbtack is to help service professionals find new customers for less than the price of lunch. We’ve made a lot of progress -250,000 service pros are using Thumbtack to find new customers, but we still have a lot of work to do.

EThe Thumbtack team comes from many different educational backgrounds. Big colleges and small colleges. Universities on the east coast, west coast, midwest, and abroad. Law degrees, engineering degrees, business degrees, you name it. We put all of our educations to use helping service pros grow their business.

RThumbtack has a team of online marketing experts who know how to create advertising campaigns that connect with customers. We have a team of designers and engineers who have created a simple, easy to use product that is always being improved. We can leverage the strength of our community of pros in a way that smaller companies couldn’t.

RWe realized we were ready when we started seeing our local service pros double or even triple the size of their businesses using Thumbtack. When we realized we could do that, we knew we could help 1,000s more pros.

IWe can do better than just a single individual…here’s 7 pros who have used Thumbtack to achieve success in their businesses – http://www.thumbtack.com/pros/stories

CWe have had to lift ourselves up and be scrappy – like many of our service pros, we are still a small business ourselves. Fixing the market for services so that customers and service pros are satisfied is no easy task – but we love big problems!

KThere are many keys to success, but we would say that working hard is one of the biggest. Our team is working around the clock, and a huge reason for our success is the energy we’re able to put towards moving forward. We also make an effort to surround ourselves with quality people, both here at HQ and in our network of pros.

Julia Pavlicek on the Importance of Education

January 29, 2013

JuliaPI think education is important but the type of education is dependent on what the child needs and wants to be successful. Not everyone is meant to go to college. That is why I am writing the book, “Putting Sexy Back in Votech, Vocational Education and Trades” to get young people to look at the choices before making a decision about what kind of education would be the most beneficial for them.

I started out working in a factory making notebooks. I then went to college to be a Registered Nurse and worked as a nurse for eighteen years. I then went to a job fair where I got a job as a flight attendant. I have since worked as a flight attendant for the last fourteen years. Now I’m also an author.

DERRICK Interview with Louis Tanguay of Circle Marketing

November 13, 2012

Encouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Louis Tanguay who is the Managing Director of the full-service marketing company Circle Marketing. Louis has been personally building online businesses since the mid-90’s while working for the Business Incubator Event Zero in Boston. Circle Marketing started in mid-2010 as a way to help bring large company efficiencies to the small businesses of America and help small business owners follow an efficient and effective path to success.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My dream is to help small businesses utilize the power of modern marketing strategies and technology, the internet and social media for example, to make just as big an impact as the “big boys.” The internet has evened the playing field, so that all a business needs these days is a solid product and or service, and the right strategy to marketing effectively and efficiently. We have helped every business we have worked with to grow in varying degrees (5-35% growth), and are looking forward to helping dozens more businesses in the coming year achieve that same level of success.

E is for Encourage. What encourages you?

Every time Circle Marketing helps a small business gain more sales, more social media followers, and finds efficiency in their revenue streams, we are encouraged to continue. Every bit of success we have solidifies what we are doing here, and proves to us that we are helping small businesses help themselves to bigger profits. That tells us we’re on the right path, and encourages us to keep it up!

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

I have the unique gift of not being very polar when it comes to marketing. What this means is that I understand a broad range of marketing areas, not just specialize in only one thing. Sure, there are better designers or developers than me, but I understand both their worlds, and just hire the best to work for Circle Marketing. My broad understanding and ability to translate what the client wants into an effective and efficient strategy, then translate that strategy to both designers and developers is a resource and gift I am so thankful to own. Understanding the entire concept-to-completion process, in my opinion, is better than only specializing in just one area.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

When I was unemployed. I was laid off in the middle of the Great Recession in 2009, but I had 16 years of experience. The tighter budgets made it difficult for someone like me to get in the door, because of the titles I had in the past. So, I figured what is the best way to get a job right then and how could I never have to worry about money again? Well, I would hire myself to help other people make more money! And…it worked! I started Circle Marketing in 2010 as a way to help small businesses grow in any economy, and put together the general strategies we use today. So, if anyone says they can’t find a job, just encourage them to hire themselves doing something they’re passionate about!

I is for Individual. Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why?

I could say a great number of inspirational figures, but since we’re talking more about business here, I would suggest people read The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes. Chet unfortunately just passed away due to complications with Leukemia, which is tragic, but he left behind an amazing system of business development which will help any business of any size grow bigger and act more strategically.

C is for Continue. When you fail, things look bleak or are not optimistic what makes you want to continue?

Failure is never something to fear. Failure, big or small, is the greatest teacher we will ever have. I have learned more from my failures than I have from my successes, because when you have success, you can just copy, paste, rinse and repeat. However, when you fail, you have to analyze why you failed, think about what you could have done differently, and have a plan for a different outcome if you are ever in that situation again. There are many great inspirational quotes to add in here, so I’ll just choose two that stuck with me over the years, “Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.” – Confucius … and … “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

To me, the Key to success is a simple formula:

Focus + Strategy + Hard Work + Determination x Positivity = Success. With that formula, you simply will not fail, and you will absolutely find the success you’re looking for…and then some!

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with?

I think the biggest thing I can say, which I hope people take more than anything else I said, would be to understand that no one did it by themselves, and then again no one is going to help you either. I’ll explain that seemingly dichotomous statement. When you achieve success, it’s because you had the right attitude, worked hard, cared about your product and customers, hired the right people, made the right connections, and built strong relationships which you leveraged for either bigger sales, bigger profits, or both. No one just makes a million dollars on their own one day, by themselves, without any help whatsoever.

Then again, no one is going to just hand over a million dollars to you, either. You have to put in the work. You have to build those relationships, do the market research, find the right partners, and not spend your time doing things which won’t help your business, while spending most of your time doing things which will directly help your business. You control your own destiny. You will get exactly what you deserve in the business world.

Business isn’t emotional. It’s business. If you work hard, build great relationships, never quit, and work efficiently and strategically and stay very positive the whole way through, then you WILL find that success you’re looking for…and then some. I promise you. Just keep smiling, stay focused, and NEVER QUIT!

Winners never quit, and quitters never win. Be A Winner!
