KZ

Encouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with  KZ  who is a phenomenol unsigned  Artist and Songwriter from Pensacola Florida. With 10+years of amazing musical accomplishments under  my belt. Such as tons of radio play from stations stemming from Florida to  Germany. Multiple magazine placements including The Source & Ozone  Magazine. I’ve opened up for dozens of A-List celebrities and entertainers.  Also I was selected for BET 106 & Parks FREESTYLE FRIDAY. And currently I  was also selected as one of the Top 20. In the Snoop Dogg Collaboration  Contest.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My  dreams/goals is to one day soon start my own Indie label. With only major  distribution from the major labels. That way I have full creative control  over the music I put out. And give unsigned artists the same platform as  the major labels free of charge if I believe in them and choose to  represent them.

E is for Education. What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

My educational background is communication and soon will be  business entrepreneuring. Which are the 2 main ingredients. I apply daily  in starting and successfully running my own business/record label.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

Experience and hardworking plus unique quality  music is what I bring to the table. The industry is currently oversaturated  with the same sound. And the consumers/listeners are in high demand for  something new and different. I plan on being the voice of a new era of  music and entertainment.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I had a premonition years and years ago that this is what I’m  destined to do. Being a huge fan of music since I was 9 yrs old til now. I  realized as I was getting older that the same passion burned inside of me  and never changed. The knowledge, progression, experience, and constant  determination. Has definitely prepared me for what is destined.

I is for Individual. Name at least one individual in your network that others should learn more about and why?

My manager and mentor David Malone.  Is very important when mentioning my support system. He has not only helped  shape and mold me into the artist I am today. But he grinds alongside me  24/7 to make situations happen. Truly a blessing to have David in my corner for real.

C is for Challenges. What challenges have you had to overcome?

Failure and letdowns are common obstacles in preventing success.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

So the keys to success. Is to simply overcome those Failures/letdowns and keep pushing forward. Either the weight of the world is placed on your shoulders. To make you stronger or break you. So its up to you on how you choose to carry it.

DERRICK Interview with Entertainer Word One

July 23, 2013

WordOneEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Word One (aka Grey Poltergeist) who has become one of the fastest growing names in hip-hop over the past year. He has opened the door for change in the music industry with his “Underdog Movement” by creating music and a movement that caters to your average, everyday citizen.

Traveling the country, doing everything from drug dealing to owning his own business, recording artist Word One is ready to tell the world his story of being an UNDERDOG. Born in Los Angeles, California; although, raised mostly in New York and Jacksonville, Florida, Word One would tell you that he’s the “man from nowhere”, because of all of his travels in between and all of the different cities that he’s lived in.

What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My goal is to provide a good financial living for my family and provide my mother with the best medical attention she can get. I have achieved many goals: Such as featuring with a 2-time Grammy winning artist, working with platinum artists an producers, traveling throughout the country and abroad, being signed (more than once), and being able to say that I’ve touched countless lives.

What is your educational background and how do you use it daily?

I am a High School graduate. The ability to read properly and calculate numbers is about all the school education I could apply to my life. School cannot teach you common sense though. My most valuable education comes from experience from myself and others.

What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

The only resource I can bring to what I do is experience. But I don’t use that to stand out. Instead, I use my experiences to create music that the people can relate to. I can only hope that it shows them that they’re not alone in their problems.

WordOneLogoWhen did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

I was ready from the moment that I decided this is what I wanted to do. Whether others felt or feel that I’m ready is a different story. I dedicate my all to my craft. But I don’t believe that anyone should pursue a goal or career if they don’t feel ready from the start.

Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why?

Jesus. There’s really no one else worth learning about more than him.

What challenges have you had to overcome?

The challenges to make it even this far are countless. But even to this day, there is always negativity thrown at what I do. Every accomplishment is met with skepticism. Every show needs to get promoted 100 times harder for a fraction of a larger artist’s turnout. Having to overcome people’s ideals that because they haven’t heard of me, it means my music isn’t good or haven’t accomplished anything.

What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

There are no shortcuts to success. Once you have determined what your goal is; nothing else should exist until you have reached it. You must develop a tunnel-vision that leads to that goal. Partying, sex, and nonsense will be around for eternity. You won’t miss anything. Hard work and dedication are more than catch-phrases. They should be the words that guide your life and lead you to your goal. It will also separate you from the countless number of others fighting to reach your goal before you do.

New York Blog Series Part 2: Baltimore To The Rescue

November 30, 2011

After traveling for what it seemed like days we rested for the night in Baltimore, Maryland. This gave my wife Kim  a chance to meet up with her good friend Kay. K & K became good friends when they worked together at Columbus Regional Hospital years ago.

Derrick Kim and Kay

Kay’s husband Samuel Fianko-Ofori is a Minister and powerful Author from Ghana who has written over 10 books. Sam came up with a brilliant idea for Sunday morning. He challenged each of our children to prepare their talents to be perfomed at a small church service in the living room. Amber performed an original rap. Alex worked the keyboards and DeMya gave us grace through her sweet sounding solo. Minisiter Sam preached the word through Matthew 25:14-28. What is your talent and what are you doing with it?

Sam With Our Family After Church

When it was time to say goodbye to Baltimore, MD  we packed our bags and headed to New York City.
