DERRICK Interview with Soles4Souls Founder Wayne Elsey

December 13, 2012

WayneElseyEncouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview is with Wayne Elsey who as founder of Soles4Souls helped put over 19 million pairs of shoes on the feet of those in need. He has appeared on Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, and authored “Almost Isn’t Good Enough”. Today, Wayne Elsey Enterprises empowers other nonprofits to make the biggest impact possible.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My dream/goal is to impact and make a difference in as many lives as possible while I’m on this planet. I have been very blessed to impact many lives, but I know there is so much more that I can do.

E is for Encourage. What encourages you?

It encourages me when people take action. We “say” and we “talk” but we must “act” to truly make a difference. When I see people who act, that encourages me.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

The most important resources I bring to the table are experience and of course passion. I have not been successful at everything I’ve ever tried. But the things that I am most passionate about, I have been the most successful with. I think that the combination is invaluable.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

It wasn’t until I was already knee-deep in my nonprofit efforts that I realized I was ready. When you answer the call to help others, you’re really just following without knowing where it’s headed. When you start to see the results and you see that people are being impacted, that’s when you realize that you are not only ready but you’re ready to do even more.

I is for Individual. Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why?

Mother Theresa – need I say anymore?

C is for Continue. When you fail, things look bleak or are not optimistic what makes you want to continue?

This is especially relevant to me; I’ve had moments where I was ready to take my own life when I was younger. For me, I had an incredible caring teacher that made realize I was special, important, and that I mattered. Realizing my self-worth was what I needed to continue. Realizing the change I was capable of making in the lives of other people became one of the biggest motivators in my life. Those realizations and reminders are never far away when times are not as optimistic.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

One of the biggest keys to success is education or learning. Learn as much as you can and learn from people that are smarter than you. Learn from every experience and learn how to become a servant to others. Everything thing you learn is essentially your education.

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with?

Make a conscious effort to serve other people and expect nothing in return but the experience alone. You will be amazed at how becoming a servant to others will end up benefiting the personal goals you aim to accomplish.
