3. Today’s Honoree:

Miracle Babies Founder Dr. Sean Daneshmand is Today’s Honoree

SEAN DANESHMAND M.D. has been a practicing maternal-fetal medicine specialist at the San Diego Perinatal Center for the past 9 years. He graduated from New York Medical College in 1995 and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1999. He went on to pursue a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of San Diego, California and started his practice at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns in 2002. He has published many papers and delivered numerous presentations at local and international meetings and conferences on his original thesis on amniotic fluid volume regulation.

Dr. Daneshmand is also a Clinical Professor at the Department of Reproductive Medicine at the University of San Diego, California.

Beyond his medical expertise, Dr. Daneshmand is deeply familiar with the emotional and physical challenges presented by a high risk pregnancy, and also with the financial and logistical challenges that parents face when their babies are born preterm. All too often, Dr. Daneshmand had witnessed families go into financial crisis due to their medical crisis.

This is why Dr. Daneshmand and a group of committed parents and volunteers established Miracle Babies., a community based 501(c)3 agency, in 2009. The organization’s unique mission and committed leadership have drawn the attention and participation of many in the community, whose donations have helped them provide over 150 families with $178,000 in immediate financial assistance. Dr. Daneshmand was also named a “CNN Hero” in 2010 for his work with Miracle Babies.

Miracle Babies helps qualified low income families meet their basic expenses while they are caring for an infant in the NICU. Hospital social workers evaluate families’ need by considering several factors, including income-to-debt ratio, gestation age of child at time of birth, and the severity and nature of birth abnormalities. Qualified families receive Miracle Babies funding applications that will enable them to receive grants of up to $2500.

Miracle Babies also can provide local families with clothing, cribs and other tangible items to help when the child is released from the hospital, creating a continuity of care.

His new 2 year demonstration program, “Healthy Mother’s for Healthy Children ” aims to educate pregnant women and prevent these complications from happening. The program is using a grant donation of $420,000 which will focus on 50 low-income women each year who are overweight or obese, and are at risk of pre-term delivery and other complications.

The program includes:

1. Fitness training

2. Nutritional counseling and nutrition analysis system/pedometers

3. Program management for enrollment, monitoring and data collection

4. Public outreach and communications

The intended outcome is to decrease the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive-related complications in subsequent pregnancies of women who were overweight or obese at the beginning of the program.

Dr. Daneshmand has also recently started weekly walks, with the first 2 months at Torrey Pines every Sunday starting at 8:30 am. His intention is to first have fun, but also to get women and their families healthier. He believes that in order to secure the best chance in life for our future, we need to ensure that women our healthy. HW4HC is an arm of Miracle Babies intended towards addressing obesity in our reproductive age and pregnant women.

As you know, majority of preterm births occur after 32 weeks of gestation. Many babies are born early due to co-morbidities associated with obesity such as poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and preeclampsia. He hopes to spread the word about this group activity with the hope that it will soon occur in every county and city in the US! This group activity does not mean that everyone has to walk at the same pace or finish at the same time, but
to show solidarity and respect for our fellow human beings and ensuring a healthy start in life for our little ones.

The financial support that Miracle Babies can provide is important during a critical time, yet they understand that that is only just the start of the journey. The agency also offers a family network for group support and education on typical challenges facing pre-term children and children with other challenging beginnings.

4. DERRICK Interview:

Encouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes gives a DERRICK Interview by asking 7 questions through each letter of his first name to give you an insightful perspective from other experts, entrepreneurs, celebrities and up and coming super stars.

Today’s DERRICK Interview  is with Capril Cruz , a native of New York City and current resident of the state of Georgia. Capri Cruz is always interested in speaking with and advocating for foster children, and others who are attracted to the power of personal transformation through the workings of personal development.

D is for Dream. What is your dream, goals or what have you achieved?

My dream is to inspire people, specifically children in foster care, survivors of foster care, and others who are lost or broken, to realize their own personal power through the workings of their mindset and to help them understand the process of healthy decision-making. I hope to touch the hearts of the many in order to assist in creating a positive change for the futures of those who wish to heal and become the best person they can be. I’m the author of From Foster Care to Fabulous: An Imperative Movement and the co-author of Ripping Gripping Fear Out of Your Story. Both are personal growth and development books. Both are based on my own life experiences. The first is a template for foster care survivors to achieve fundamental emotional building blocks to heal and grow mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

E is for Encourage. What encourages you?

The thing that encourages me is the understanding I have of the power of God in my own life. I came from nothing, had no family, and based on statistics; I should either be dead, on drugs, homeless, or a prostitute, at the very least. But I’m not! And it’s not really because of anything I consciously did; it’s because of God’s Grace. I see how God saved me, protected me, and put people and circumstances in my life to help guide me during a time when I was pretty much my own worst enemy. I didn’t know what I didn’t know, just like most people don’t know what they don’t know. Today, I understand the power of love, forgiveness, hope, education, and mentorship. Combined, they create miracles in the lives of the most broken of people because they are all elements of what God desires for us. Without the relationship I have with Jesus Christ, I would still be lost, emotionally broken, and my own worst enemy.

R is for Resource. What resources do you bring to the table that makes you unique or stand out?

All of my life’s experiences are my resources but when looked upon holistically, they are synergy at its best. I have personal accomplishments that add to my bucket of resources, like the PhD I’m working to complete, twenty years of active duty service in the U.S. Navy that has taught me more now that I’m 42 years old than I realized even five years ago, being a certified Life Coach, and a two time author, but those resources are only the blessings I’ve been able to achieve due to the compilation of all my life’s experiences and the drive that was created within my spirit. I was born into an abusive situation, went on to foster care and experienced more abusive experiences, was sexually abused, became homeless, and spent a life time without any real family foundation, all which have been the foundation of my ultimate resources, but the greatest resource is what I’ve learned from these situations that has helped me to become the solution-focused, lead-by-example person that I am today, who is emotionally healed and who knows that the power of change comes ONLY from within.

R is for Ready. When did you realize you were ready for what you are doing now?

Every day I realize a little bit more that I am that much more ready, but initially, I realized it when my readers told me that my story touched their lives in a positive way. Prior to that, I had a woman tell me, “No one cares about your story, Capri”. Although I knew that God had led me to write it in a book, her comment affected me in a negative way. It created doubt in my mind. I knew I had to hold on to what was in my spirit. Yet and still, I didn’t know that I was “ready” to be this spokesperson I am today. But through the positive feedback I’ve received and my faith, something deep inside me kept guiding me to move forward despite this one person’s negative comments to me.

I is for Individual. Name at least one person that you know that you feel others should learn about and why?

There have been a quite a few people that have inspired me over the years to become who I am today. You see, growth is a process, and personal growth is definitely a process too. Through the process of me being exposed to these people, I was able to rebuild my new-self using things and ideas I learned from all of them. The first person I read about and really learned from was Jesus Christ and the power of His forgiveness he gives to us all. I also learned from Dr. Robert Anthony’s The Ultimate Secrets of Total Self-Confidence and Napolean Hill’s Think and Grow Rich.

C is for Continue. When you fail, things look bleak or are not optimistic what makes you want to continue?

Knowing that my life story and my situation, no matter how bad it was, is not the “worst”. There are others in the world that have experienced far greater tragedy than I have and are still suffering. I take time to recall how bad I suffered emotionally and how lost my mindset was for 37 years. Then I remember that there are still people out there, millions of people that need the help and guidance I received. They need to see people like me who have come out on the other side of their trauma with a miracle of a story that they too can achieve.

K is for Key. What keys to success can you leave for upcoming entrepreneurs and leaders?

Connect with your spirit. Your gifts and life’s purpose resides within your spirit. Be BOLD, be fearless, and never give up. When your life is Christ-centered, you can NEVER go wrong.

Is there anything that we did not touch on that you would like to inspire others with?

My deepest core value is that everything, and I mean EVERYTHING starts and ends with ME. The way I think, feel, act, my beliefs, my attitude in life, my expectations, perceptions, work ethic, ambition, and my ability to love those that I feel do not even deserve it because of the pain they’ve caused me, everything…it all starts and ends with me. If I have a problem in life, the answer resides in me. I do not blame anyone for anything in my life. Rather, I move through the pain, learn the lesson, and move forward smartly. Yes, we all know there are preexisting influencers that have molded us to be who we are today but if something about us as individuals is not working or producing healthy results, it is only ourselves who can change the outcome of our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.

5. One word article:

With each article I take one key word and use each letter to give you the main points in the lessons.

FAITH It Until You Make It by Encouragement Speaker Derrick Hayes

I used to say to fake it until you make it. Later in my learning I was taught that faith is what moves God so I want you to FAITH It Until You Make It.  FAITH in this exercise is defined as Focus, Align, Improve, Teach and to Hear others.

F is for Focus. What do you want to accomplish? Do you have a plan in place to help you make it happen? Turn your nightmare into your day dream by thinking of ways to make it instead of why you should not?  When your thoughts are open, seeds will be planted for you to say and do the right things. Think you can and you will.

A is for Align. Be prepared to say no. You want the right people, places and things in your life. If they don’t align with your goals put them on standby or the extended backburner. The right people are ones that can open doors for you or put you in position with others that can. The right places are where you are not always looking over your shoulder wondering if you should be there.  The right things are the little things that mean a lot.

I is for Improve.  In order to get better you have to be willing to improve. You can make adjustments on your own or ask others how you can improve? Pull out a sheet of paper and write down your strengths,   weaknesses and goals. See what areas in which you can get better in order for you to reach your goals. When you improve it will inspire others to move.

T is for Teach. When you are seen as an expert others will want to learn from you. Give back to those that are willing to learn. Develop your knowledge into free and fee workshops. Some opportunities will be charged to your heart and others will have to be charged to the customer. The more you teach the more you will reach. Keep empowering others.

H is for Hear. One of the greatest things you can ever do it to sit still. Listen to your dream and see what success tells you. Talk to God and let God talk back to you and see where your relationship goes. Listen to your children by asking their opinions on ideas. Whitney Houston sang it best that “the children are our future so let them lead the way.” They are not afraid.

Each day aim to Focus, Align, Improve, Teach and Hear what others have to say. You no longer have to  fake it until you make it but you can now FAITH It Until You Make It.

When you make it, Keep the FAITH.
